Philippians 1:1-18
Upon reading the opening words of the epistle, one or two questions immediately present themselves.
`Paul and Timotheus the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the
bishops and deacons' (Phil. 1:1).
(1) Why does Paul omit the title `apostle'?
(2) Why does he include the title `servants'?
(3) Why does he mention `the bishops and deacons'?
Four of the epistles of Paul omit the title `apostle' in the opening salutation. These are 1 and 2 Thessalonians,
Philippians and Philemon. As 1 and 2 Thessalonians are addressed by `Paul and Sylvanus and Timotheus', the title
`apostle' could hardly be included without lowering its distinctive meaning when used elsewhere by the apostle Paul
