I N D E X
CHARLES H. WELCH
72
My act was suicidal, I knew that what I intended to do would cancel all the hopes, nullify all the preparation that
the College Training efforts had held before me. I had been away from the leather craft too long to think of
returning and taking it up again, and a blank yawned at my feet. Nevertheless I made the offer on the spot to Mr.
Brininger that I would go to him the outcast, and hold Bible meetings in his own house forthwith. At the time I was
responsible for a mission among the Jews in Aldgate, and walked each Sunday (for riding in any form of vehicle
was forbidden) the whole length of road from Forest Gate to Aldgate (about four miles, in all weathers) take
the meeting and walk back again. This was willingly undertaken, believing as I did at the time that Sunday was
`The Lord's Day' and equivalent to the Sabbath. As a sample of the approach employed at that time and in that
mission, I reprint a composition which was exposed to view for all who passed by.

`SAYING NONE OTHER THINGS THAN THOSE WHICH THE PROPHETS AND MOSES DID SAY
SHOULD COME'
(Acts 26:22).
* The Law *
*
*
*
*
`And God spake all these words', we read
Exod. 20:1
When He, The Law, to Israel gave;
And in that Law, (would they but heed!),
He tells of sacrifice to save:
Lev. 1-5
Oh Son of Israel! broken is that Law,
Exod. 32:19
And God demands perfection - without flaw.
Lev. 22:21.
The Holiness of God

Isaiah, in the Temple, saw
Isa. 6:1
Exalted, High, The King of kings;
Isa. 6:2
Bright Seraphim with holy awe
Did veil their faces with their wings;
And, `Holy Holy, Holy', Lord, their cry
Isa. 6:3
Whilst man cries out, `unclean, unclean am I'
Isa. 6:5.
The sinfulness of Man
*
*
*
*
*
*
All men, by nature guilty stand,
Psa. 14:1-3
The curse on all is justly laid;
see Rom. 3:9-26
They give no heed to His command,
Deut. 27:26
The Holy Law is disobeyed;
see Gal. 3:8-16
All we, like sheep, have turned - gone
our own way;
Isa. 53:6
Nor tears, nor prayers, nor works our debt
can pay.
see Rom. 4:1-25.
The Law's claims
*
*
*
*
*
*
Yet whilst the Law of God still stands;
Its claim OR curse, must needs be met;
And love such as the Law demands,
Deut. 6:4,5
No mortal ever offered yet
see Matt. 22:37
Hence by the deeds of Law, no flesh can be -
see Rom. 3:20
Made Righteous, nor can man, from sin set free.
Psa. 49:7.
